Knee Pain
The knee is a stable hinge joint that bears the most weight of any joint in the body. Responsible for balance and stability and in constant demand, they are also the joints most prone to injury. The complex structure of the cartilage, tendons, ligaments, and muscles of the knee can all sustain damage due to improper alignment, trauma, general wear and tear, or genetic predisposition. Knee pain can affect everything from your leisure life to your work life.

What are the symptoms of knee pain?
Some of the complaints we hear at Cornerstone Wellness Center include severe knee pain while sitting, walking, going up and down stairs, and running. However, pain is not the only indication of a knee injury—popping, clicking, or grinding sounds when kneeling or squatting may indicate knee damage. Weakness, stiffness, lack of full range of motion, and instability are also concerns that need to be investigated. Because the knee joint is so multifaceted, pain on the inside of the knee can indicate an entirely different condition than pain on the outside of the knee. This is why proper diagnosis is extremely important when treating knee injuries.
Possible Causes for Knee Pain
Athletes who regularly participate in high-impact sports place extreme demands on their knees by twisting, pivoting, and making sudden stops and starts. However, non-athletes sustain the majority of knee injuries, arising from a variety of causes including poor posture, being overweight, arthritis, gout, sprains, strains, IT band issues, and years of normal activity.
The stabilizing ligaments inside the knee are particularly susceptible to damage. For example, a torn or injured ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), MCL (medial collateral ligament), or meniscus is a regular occurrence among those who twist, pivot, and turn with regularity. While such stress injuries are a common source of knee pain among younger people, older people tend to suffer from knee injuries and pain related to everyday, degenerative wear and tear and from conditions like osteoarthritis, tendonitis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, and bursitis.
Treating Knee Pain
At Cornerstone Wellness Center, we look beyond your specific knee pain symptoms and do a full analysis of your total musculoskeletal functioning, because knee pain does not always begin and end with the knee. Similarly, knee pain treatment is approached with a highly effective combination of therapies, integrating the strengthening and stretching benefits of physical therapy with chiropractic expertise to correct imbalances and improper functioning.
Muscle strengthening of the quadriceps and hamstring muscles, with appropriate physical therapy guidance, will aid in stabilizing the knee and improving balance. Joint support taping, soft tissue treatment, and laser light therapy can all assist in restoring peak functionality, as well as other state-of-the-art, research-based techniques. Treatment options we will explore with you include:
- Prolotherapy
- Physical Therapy
- Spinal Decompression
- Trigger Point Injection Therapy
- Chiropractic Adjustment
- Joint Injection Therapy
